Michigan recruits smallest share of out-of-state freshman compared to other Midwest states

Michigan ranks last in the Midwest for recruiting students from out-of-state to attend college. While a primary charge for our state’s colleges and universities is to educate students from Michigan, recruiting students from out-of-state is an economic driver and supports the talent pool.

Research shows that greater than 50% of grads stay in the same state where they attended college. Bringing in more out-of-state students is a net positive for Michigan’s labor market and economy. The percentage of out-of-state students in Michigan has grown since 2014, however, the state still falls short for attracting out-of-state talent.
