Transfer student Bachelor’s degree success rate at Michigan’s independent colleges continues to rise, leading the nation in transfer student success

Success rate for transfer students at independent, nonprofit colleges and universities in Michigan increased 8.4% between 2017 and 2021.

Independent colleges and universities are a top destination for students transferring from community colleges in Michigan. About 20% of transfer students seeking a bachelor’s degree in Michigan choose an independent college or university.

The 2021 average 8-year bachelor’s degree success rate for transfer students at an independent college or university in Michigan was 70%. The rate is up 8.4% from 65% in 2017 and 2018. Twelve of Michigan’s independent colleges and universities have transfer student success rates over 70% with some as high as 91%.

Nationally, Michigan is a leader in transfer student success. Transfer students complete a bachelor’s degree at independent colleges and universities nationally at 58%. This rate has not changed since 2017 when the data started to be collected.
