Michigan Independent Colleges and Universities

Peter serves as the Vice President for the Michigan Independent Colleges & Universities (MICU). MICU is a non-profit organization dedicated to representing the interests of Michigan’s independent, not-for-profit, colleges and universities. At MICU Peter is responsible for all services offered to MICU members and works to align the needs of the college and university presidents with the offerings of the association.

Peter comes to MICU from Acuitas, a Lansing based advocacy firm. At Acuitas, Peter was legislative director, serving a wide range of corporate, non-profit and educational clients where he specialized in education policy, tax policy and appropriations.

Peter formerly served as the Assistant Director for Government Relations for the Michigan Association of School Boards working with over 4,000 local elected officials, superintendents and state legislators to help improve public education.

At MASB, he worked closely with leaders in the education community and state officials on policy, departmental rules, regulations and implementation of the three. In addition to direct advocacy with lawmakers, Peter served as one of the key points of contact for statewide media efforts for the association and directed the coordinated grassroots strategy for the school management community.

Prior to joining MASB, Peter was the Associate Director of the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association where he ran the association’s advocacy, communications and membership development efforts. Peter also interned for then-State Representative Tim Melton (D – Auburn Hills) in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Dedicated to public service, Peter has worked with Ingham County chapters of the Relay for Life and AIDS Walk Michigan, volunteered with the Ronald McDonald House of Lansing and the YMCA of Lansing. He’s served as President of the James Madison College Alumni Association Board of Directors and was elected in November of 2011 to the Lansing School Board.

Peter is a graduate of James Madison College at Michigan State University where he studied Social Relations and Policy with an emphasis on Education Policy and Homeland Security Studies. He was also a fellow in the prestigious Michigan Political Leadership Program and named one of Lansing’s 10 over the Next Ten for 2013.
